Gates Foundation Honors 2023 Goalkeepers Awardees, Announces Commitments to Advance the Sustainable Development Goals
Awardees include Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter, Bono, and activists from Cameroon, Ethiopia, and the United States
NEW YORK, Sept. 20, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — At its annual Goalkeepers events, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced this year’s Goalkeepers Global Goals Award winners, recognizing the contributions of six remarkable leaders working in their communities and around the world to advance progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
The awards ceremony took place during UN General Assembly week on the evening of September 19. It was followed by a daytime event today to discuss current and future efforts to achieve the Global Goals through concrete action and new approaches to development finance. Participants included Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan, President William Ruto of Kenya, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates, and more than 400 young changemakers from around the world.
Earlier this week, the foundation responded to an alarming reversal in progress on Global Goal 3 by announcing commitments totaling $200 million to help achieve universal access to family planning products and information, faster delivery of lifesaving health solutions, and a reduction in maternal and child mortality.
“Halfway to the deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals, our annual Goalkeepers Report shows that on 18 indicators—from poverty to gender equality, education to food security, health to climate—the world is off track,” said Mark Suzman, CEO of the Gates Foundation. “But we also see where innovation, investment, and the extraordinary work of passionate changemakers around the world have the potential to turn the tide, saving the lives of 2 million mothers and babies by 2030.”

Celebrating Global Goalkeepers
This year’s 2023 Goalkeepers Global Goals Awards Ceremony was hosted by Elaine Welteroth, award-winning journalist, TV host, and author, and was attended by global leaders, activists, and celebrities. The event included special performances by Tiwa Savage, Nigerian singer-songwriter and actress; Usha Jey, Tamil dancer and choreographer; Zara Larsson, Swedish singer-songwriter; and the Harlem Gospel Choir.
The daytime event featured special guests Jon Batiste, American musician and singer; David Oyelowo, actor, director, and producer; Titilope Sonuga, Nigerian poet and former poet laureate; and Sallie Krawcheck, founder of Ellevest.
“This year’s Goalkeepers Global Goals Award winners show us how human ingenuity and innovation can help tackle some of the world’s most difficult challenges,” said Blessing Omakwu, deputy director, global content and campaigns and Goalkeepers lead. “Everyone has the power to make a difference in their communities, and these courageous and indefatigable advocates are helping tens of thousands of people live healthier, more productive lives.”
This year’s awards include:
- The 2023 Global Goalkeeper Award, which recognizes a leader who has driven progress on a global scale toward achieving the Global Goals, was presented to the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, for championing resilient, equitable, and sustainable universal health coverage for all; embedding the Global Goals in Japan’s development cooperation charter; and strengthening the global health architecture to prevent future pandemics.
- The 2023 Campaign Award, which celebrates a campaign that has raised awareness or built a community by inspiring action and creating change, was presented to The Farmlink Project, founded by Aidan Reilly, Ben Collier, and James Kanoff, for its work advocating for and building community around food equity in the United States. Through its network of more than 600 student fellows and 6,000 volunteers, The Farmlink Project has provided 83 million meals and transferred more than 130 million pounds of nutritious food to communities facing hunger.
- The 2023 Changemaker Award, which celebrates an individual who has inspired change using personal experience or from a position of leadership, was presented to Ashu Martha Agbornyenty for her work reducing high rates of maternal mortality in Cameroon. She writes about the work of midwives and shares her knowledge on pregnancy through her blog, Marthie’s Midwifery Diary. Through her For Mom & Baby Foundation, she and her team provide community workshops and distribute emergency kits containing essential birth supplies to pregnant women in crisis-stricken areas, reaching 1,000 women and girls in the region since 2021.
- The 2023 Progress Award, which celebrates an individual who supports progress via a science, technology, digital, or business initiative, was presented to journalist, social entrepreneur, digital innovator, and human rights activist Eden Tadesse. Tadesse founded the online platform Invicta, a global impact platform that promotes digital financial inclusion, skills development, and access to job opportunities for urban refugees. More than 35,000 people from 90 countries have registered on Invicta, with 7,000 of them completing online courses and more than 2,200 refugees finding employment.
Special recognition awards were presented to Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter and Bono for their tireless work over many decades towards global health and development.
- The Goalkeepers Lifetime Achievement Award was given to former President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, honoring their extraordinary work on disease eradication, mental health, democracy, conflict resolution, human rights, and, most notably, combating neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as Guinea worm disease, river blindness, and malaria. The award was accepted on their behalf by Paige Alexander, CEO of the Carter Center, and Jason Carter, chair of the Carter Center Board of Trustees.
- The Goalkeepers Voice Award was presented to Bono, founder of the ONE Campaign and (RED), lead singer of the band U2, and activist, for his significant impact on SDG progress through advocacy and campaigning with ONE and (RED).

Accelerating Progress Toward the Global Goals
The Gates Foundation announced the following commitments this week:
- Long-term commitment of up to $100 million to help meet the demand in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) for family planning supplies. This funding will go to the UNFPA Supplies Partnership to ensure more women in LMICs are able to access the contraceptives they need and want at a price they can afford. Contraceptives are critical building blocks of women’s power and can accelerate progress toward nearly every SDG—whether that’s ending poverty or improving global health. This commitment comes at a time when the global funding gap for contraceptives is growing, with the potential to cumulatively reach $1 billion by 2030 if we do not preserve funding and bring in additional support, including through sustainable financing approaches.
- Long-term commitment of $100 million to bring faster access to health products in low- and middle-income countries. This funding will go to Unitaid, doubling the foundation’s previous commitment, to support its work to accelerate the introduction and delivery of new lifesaving solutions at equitable scale, including those for maternal and newborn health. Unitaid’s unique approach helps reach the health-related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals more quickly. Its previous work unlocked access to more than 100 groundbreaking health products, including those for HIV, TB, and malaria; women’s and children’s health; and pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response.
About the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In developing countries, it focuses on improving people’s health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In the United States, it seeks to ensure that all people—especially those with the fewest resources—have access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life. Based in Seattle, Washington, the foundation is led by CEO Mark Suzman, under the direction of Co-chairs Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates and the board of trustees.
About Goalkeepers
Goalkeepers is the foundation’s campaign to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (Global Goals). About the Global Goals
On September 25, 2015, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, 193 world leaders committed to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (Global Goals). These are a series of ambitious objectives and targets to achieve three extraordinary things by 2030: end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and fix climate change.

Bakkavor sets the record straight following its meaningful attempt to settle the strike in Spalding
LONDON, Nov. 8, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — In response to union claims of an international campaign to lobby our stakeholders – Bakkavor today speaks out and sets the record straight on the local strike in Spalding, which it has attempted to resolve.
Donna-Maria Lee, Chief People Officer at Bakkavor comments: “It is now six weeks since Unite the Union commenced strike action with a minority of our Spalding colleagues. It is now clear to us that it is becoming increasingly difficult to resolve this dispute with Unite and get people back to work anytime soon. We have engaged the Union in discussions since the start, and our CEO met with them recently out of a genuine desire to resolve the issue. Whilst a material discretionary bonus (of £350 per person) and an above inflation pay rise have been tabled for Spalding colleagues, the Union has now advised us that they have put it to ballot, with a recommendation to reject our offer.
“Coupled with this, working colleagues have reported being made to feel uncomfortable by the strikers, and the Union has set out on what it describes as “an international campaign” to directly lobby our stakeholders – when the real task for them is to settle a dispute in Spalding.
“It takes both parties to engage and whilst we have sought to resolve the issue, I met with the Union this week and it is clear that Unite has little interest in moving forward with the situation at Spalding and is intent on lobbying, publicity and politics, rather than solving a strike that they called for.”
Some key fact-checking on the context behind the strike:
- The Union has wrongly claimed that more than 700 of its members in Spalding are taking industrial action. Whilst the union may have 700 members of the 1,400-strong workforce, only c.450 are not attending work.
- Over two-thirds of Spalding colleagues, more than 950, have not engaged with strike action and are reporting to work as usual. We would like to thank them for their loyalty and support in the face of external attempts to disrupt and discredit the business.
- Whilst the union has repeatedly accused Bakkavor of making derisory pay rises, the truth is quite different. In September Bakkavor put forward an improved offer of 7.8% to its lowest paid colleagues and 6.4% across all other grades – well above the national living wage and inflation, which now stands at 1.7% (2.0% at the settlement date in May).
- Over the past three years, CPI in the UK has grown by 21%, at our Spalding site over the same three-year period the pay rate for our lowest paid colleagues has risen by 22.8% and all other grades by 21.2%, both above inflation for the period. This excludes improvements we have made to broader benefits over the same period.
- In summary, the Union’s claims of “years of real terms pay cuts”, whilst emotive, are completely without basis. The reality is that Bakkavor has worked hard to protect our colleagues through the cost-of-living crisis which many businesses have not been able to do.
- Further to the increases put forward in September, Bakkavor has offered all Spalding colleagues a discretionary £350 per person bonus to try and resolve the strike, this payment is over and above the pay rise. Again, this demonstrates Bakkavor’s willingness to engage.
- In addition to rates of pay, Bakkavor staff also receive a wide range of benefits including life insurance, personal accident insurance, access to a vast range of retailer discounts and heavily subsidised food through Bakkavor’s staff shops.
- Nationally, Bakkavor’s proposed pay rises have been welcomed across its other 20 UK sites, with over 13,500 colleagues receiving their pay rises versus our colleagues at Spalding whose payments have been delayed due to this process.
- Contrary to claims of disruption to UK food supply, Bakkavor can confirm Christmas will be unaffected by the local issue at Spalding. Its Christmas ranges are made at its other UK sites. There has been some short-term disruption to soups as an isolated product category. Traditionally, Bakkavor’s soups are only made at Spalding – but work is in hand to resolve this very quickly. This is part of our contingency planning which has enabled us to continue to produce the vast majority of products from this site.
Mike Edwards CEO at Bakkavor concludes: “In the Autumn Budget last week, the Government set out the twin aim of supporting workers and creating economic growth. We support both of these things at Bakkavor and in truth they cannot actually be separated. Our colleague pay and benefits are well above the minimum wage and ahead of inflation.
“The fact that our company’s ‘Long Service Awards’ have celebrated more than 4,000 colleagues for milestones between 5- and 35-year periods of service over the last two years shows that people choose to stay at Bakkavor and for a length of time, which would be viewed as remarkable in many industry sectors today.
“Coupled with looking after our people, which we do, we have an obligation to be a sustainable business. Our pay deals need to be fair to colleagues across all our 21 sites. We believe the offer proposed is entirely fair based on the context in which we are operating.
“The Union has a right to campaign, but our responsibility as a business – to our colleagues, customers, shareholders and to the communities in which we are a major employer – is to be sustainable, and fair, for the long term. We have been through a global pandemic and a seismic cost-of-living crisis and managing our business well ensures we will continue to create growth – growth for the economy, job creation and training opportunities for young people across the UK.
“Our offer of a pay rise and bonus to Spalding colleagues has now gone to a union ballot and Unite are recommending their members reject it. If this happens, we will be at an impasse (a ‘failure to agree’) and we will work to find a way to offer the increases to rates of pay and the bonus to all colleagues at Spalding on an individual basis. If accepted by individuals, this will see new rates implemented, back pay processed and bonus paid before Christmas which is what the majority of our Spalding colleagues want.”
