With over 250,000 members and over 14 million supporters worldwide, Benfica is not only the most supported Portuguese club, but also one of the most popular European clubs.

Extratime, a company specializing in machine learning and real-time creative advertising, is now partnering with the football giant to increase the club’s marketing and insights about Benfiquistas – both in Portugal and abroad.

“In the same way that the advertisement market is constantly evolving, the football fans are as well. Studies show that young people are consuming more football than ever before, and it’s always Benfica’s goal to optimize the match experience for its fans. This process requires understanding of who their fans are, how they are evolving and how they behave,” says Joakim Egseth Solberg, CEO of Extratime.

It was noted by Solberg that Benfica has a professional marketing team already, but he is confident that Extratime will strengthen the club’s position in the Portuguese football market.

Enhancing the experience

Vasco Ribas, Head of Sponsorship at Benfica, says Extratime provides an important service.

“We have a partnership with Extratime where they analyze the fan data as well as their consumption patterns. This allowed us to present targeted campaigns, with content adapted to the audience with higher conversion rates,” Ribas says.

“An additional advantage of this partnership is that they will present the sponsors with creative ideas, always pre-validated by us, and they will charge the sponsor directly.”

Solberg adds that Benfica makes a great fit for Extratime.

“Not only because it is an exceptional football club, but also because they have solid values, a clear positioning strategy with a new eco friendly approach. With our solution, we believe we can help them take it to the next level. Data analysis and a skilled creative team allow us to enhance the match experience and engage spectators in a whole new way.”

Tailored collaborations

With the signing of the Benfica deal, Extratime’s club portfolio now covers 99 percent of Portuguese fans.

The company will continue to work with the club’s loyal sponsors – as well as bring in new ones. Solberg says Extratime already has an extensive portfolio of brands eager to expand.

“Every club is unique. So are their fans. Our job is to tailor the collaborations to match with Benfica’s values and to give their supporters, both at the stadium and around the globe, a more relevant and fun experience.”
